My first step in creating my own Bitmap font was redrawing the alphabet using only straight lines and 90 degree angles. Essentially each letter became a piece of line art.
Next, I sketched out the letters on a grid. I established the x-height, ascenders, descenders, and width of the letters before moving on to the computer. I worked in Illustrator and made sure to snap shapes to the grid.
Once I created a full alphabet, there were many minor revisions made to each letter. Staying consistent was a challenge because I had to decide which letters got certain characteristics, and then those characteristics had to be carried out throughout the whole font.
Below you can see where I needed to decide on various placements of serifs.
Can you spot the changes between the first and final versions?
